Opening Reception Michael Childers: KNOWN / UNKNOWN
What happens when we look beyond the famous names and look again at the photographs themselves? For more than five decades, Michael Childers has photographed some of the most recognizable figures in film, art, literature and performance.
But what happens when we look beyond the famous names and look again at the photographs themselves?
KNOWN / UNKNOWN, curated by Jim Landé, brings together familiar and less familiar images from across Childers’s career, including portraits, candid encounters and photographs in which gesture, setting, and circumstance become as compelling as the celebrated sitter. Familiar faces appear in unfamiliar moments, while other photographs reveal less familiar aspects of Childers’s eye and the extraordinary worlds in which he moved and made his photographs.
Drawn from an extensive archive, the exhibition asks a deceptively simple question: What makes a Michael Childers photograph a Michael Childers photograph?
Please join Michael Childers and ORANGERIE Fine Art to celebrate the opening of KNOWN / UNKNOWN.
