Colors
of the West: The Paintings of Birger Sandzé
Palm
Springs Art Museum, 101 Museum Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92262
/ Sven Birger Sandzén (1871-1954), a Swedish-born artist,
trained in Paris and participated in its famous fin de siècle
milieu. In 1894 he immigrated to the United States and settled
in the center of the American prairie in Lindsborg, Kansas where
he was invited to become an art professor at Bethany College.
Considered a post-Impressionist for his use of color and expressionist
in technique, Sandzén vibrant and dynamic paintings of
prairie and western landscapes from Kansas to the California
coast have been relatively unknown outside the Midwest until
recently. In 1908, he made his first trip to Colorado and beginning
in 1915 became a regular visitor to Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico.
He found the beauty of the Southwest and mountains “…
a paradise for the painter.” Exhibiting with the Taos
Society of Artists in 1922, he became an associate member at
the request of Victor Higgins. During his 54-year career, his
style evolved from pointillism to a personal style of bold color
with thickly applied masses of paint earning him the title,
the “American Van Gogh.” For more information, call

Modern
Masters Celebrate Line and Form
Palm
Springs Art Museum, 101 Museum Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92262
/ Modernism in art is recognized as a time of unprecedented
stylistic growth and change. Artists in the first decades of
the twentieth century broke away from academic traditions and
embraced a new approach to sculptural form and line drawing.
Drawing and working spontaneously on paper and with print-making
techniques took on a new urgency as artists worked out their
methods freely. In sculpture, artists sought freedom from the
constrictions of the past by employing non-traditional materials
and exploring bold, abstract forms. This exhibition, beginning
with artists’ first forays into cubist and surrealistic
three-dimensional forms, also includes important fine-line drawings
and prints. The selection of works invites the viewer to explore
both the common threads as well as the very individual and personal
approaches that have produced the rich artistic legacy of Modern
art. 760.322.4800.

Melissa Etheridge
Morongo Ballroom, 49500 Seminole Dr., Cabazon, CA 92230 /
Melissa Etheridge's new single, "Fearless Love,"
a bold and soaring declaration for living - and loving - to the
fullest, has struck a momentous chord as it soars inside the Top
30 this week on the Hot AC chart, and rises to #10 on the Triple
A chart. The new album expands on the multiple strengths that
have made Etheridge one of the most beloved figures in rock. It
follows The Awakening, her revealing album of 2007, with
a rousing tone at once tough and tender, as only she can be. It
is that force of presence which has earned her, among other accolades,
the 2007 Academy Award for Best Original Song and two Grammy Awards.
For several years, Melissa's popularity built around such memorable
songs as "Bring Me Some Water" (from her debut), "No
Souvenirs" and "Ain't It Heavy", for which she
won her first Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal. Melissa hit her
commercial and artistic stride with her fourth album, Yes
I Am, featuring the massive hits "I'm the Only One"
and "Come to My Window." 800-252-4499

Loaf
Fantasy
Springs Resort & Casino, 84-245 Indio Springs Pkwy., Indio,
CA 92203 / For the past 35 years, the man born Marvin Lee Aday
has been a towering monument on the musical landscape. His legendary
1977 album Bat Out Of Hell transformed this former high
school football player, nightclub bouncer and stage actor into
one of the great American rock 'n' roll icons. That record ("Bat
Out of Hell," "Two out of Three Ain't Bad," "For
Crying Out Loud," "Paradise by the Dashboard Light"),
with its staggering operatic sound and impassioned vocals, has
sold more than 43 million albums worldwide - still one of the
biggest-selling records ever. Now, more than 30 years after he
exploded onto the world stage, Meat Loaf is back with a new record,
Hang Cool Teddy Bear (a title taken from a line in the
classic Russ Meyer trash movie Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls).
From opener "Peace On Earth" to closer "Elvis In
Vegas," its 13 tracks drag the classic Meat Loaf sound kicking

Chickenfoot
Fantasy
Springs Resort & Casino, 84-245 Indio Springs Pkwy., Indio,
CA 92203 / According to Sammy Hagar, Chickenfoot "started
off with me, Michael Anthony (Van Halen) and Chad Smith (Red Hot
Chili Peppers) jamming at my club, Cabo Wabo, in Mexico. Then
people started asking us when we were going to tour, make a record,
etc. So I said if we're going to do this properly then we're going
to have to get a guitarist, so let's talk to Joe Satriani. As
far as I'm concerned, he's the best guitarist in the world."
In 2008, Chickenfoot first performed together at a Sammy Hagar
concert in Las Vegas. Following the show, which included a three-song
Chickenfoot set with versions of Led Zeppelin's "Rock and
Roll," the hard-driving blues nugget, "Going Down,"
and Traffic's "Dear Mr. Fantasy", it was clear that
the chemistry was there. Their first album, Chickenfoot,
was released in June, 2009, to critical acclaim and strong sales.

Richard
Avedon: Fashion, Stage, and Screen
Palm
Springs Art Museum, 101 Museum Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92262
/ Richard Avedon (1923-2004) set new precedents in fashion and
portraiture for nearly seven decades. This exhibition of approximately
90 black and white photographs explores Avedon’s use of
the camera to create images that helped to define fashion, theater,
and movies as interrelated worlds that shared a similar visual
vocabulary. His interest in performance began in the 1940s and
1950s with his early photographs of leading models in designer
clothing for magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar.
Taking his models out of the studio, Avedon combined the sophistication
and glamour of haute couture with the excitement of modern life
he celebrated in the streets of Paris, Rome, and New York. For
more information, call 760.322.4800.

Show - Agua Caliente Casino, 32250 Bob Hope Dr., Rancho Mirage,
CA / Straight No Chaser are neither straight-laced, nor straight-faced,
but neither are they vaudville-style kitsch. As original member
Randy Stine comments, "We take the music very seriously;
we just don't take ourselves seriously." In the process,
they are reinventing the idea of a cappella on the modern pop
landscape. Originally formed a dozen years ago with students at
Indiana University, the group has reassembled and reemerged as
a phenomenon with a huge fanbase, millions of views on YouTube,
and a contract with Atlantic Records. In an era when so much pop
music is the product of digital processing and vocal pro-tooling,
Straight No Chaser is the real deal, the captivating sound of
ten unadulturated human voices coming together to make extraordinary
music that is moving people in a fundamental sense - and with
a sense of humor. Buy
