The Coachella Valley's only major museum,
the Palm Springs Art Museum features art, natural science
and the performing arts. Set at the base of Mt. San Jacinto
in the heart of downtown Palm Springs, the Museum's outstanding
architecture is in harmony with its desert surroundings,
offering spacious galleries, sculpture gardens, a lecture
hall and the 433-seat Annenberg Theater.
Spacious art wings
provide provocative, special art exhibitions. Visitors can view
prestigious traveling exhibitions and enjoy different presentations
from the Museum's broad permanent collection. They can browse through
galleries featuring 19th-century landscapes and classic western
American art, then explore exhibitions of bold contemporary paintings
and sculpture. A premier collection and a selection of miniature
rooms intrigue visitors of all ages.
The vast permanent collection also emphasizes modern
and contemporary art, with a particular focus on California. The
collection is a continually growing resource of engrossing works
that draw visitors again and again.
Natural Science Galleries
To comprehend nature is to nourish the soul.
In
the natural science wing a variety of permanent exhibitions emphasize
the excitement of nature. Interpretive dioramas show desert life
in its natural state, while displays of rattlesnakes, sidewinders,
gilamonsters, kangaroo rats, desert tortoises, lizards and scorpions
literally come to life. Visitors can glimpse the secret nocturnal
lifestyle of native animals, observe how they survive the desert
heat and learn how their behavior changes from day to night. They
can visualize the nearby San Andreas Fault on a graphic map of earthquake
country and see a life-like depiction of the amazing Salton Sea
with its abundant migratory bird life.
PERFORMANCES
While its expansive stage can accommodate legitimate
theater and full-scale symphony orchestras, the Annenberg
Theater radiates a warmth and intimacy that are wonderfully
appealing to smaller audiences.
Acclaimed for
its ideal acoustics, the 450-seat Annenberg Theater hosts world-class,
dance, theater and music performances. The theater also features
lecture and film series and serves as a host venue for the Palm
Springs International Film Festival. Sculpture Gardens, Museum Store,Toor

their natural desert environment. Visitors can watch a working seismograph

Nature Field Trips and Treks
Fostering appreciation for the desert landscape
Twice weekly,
from October through April, Museum naturalists offer an array of
nature hikes rated easy, moderate or strenuous. Destinations include
dozens of desert canyons, native palm oases and mountain wilderness
areas surrounding Mt. San Jacinto State Park. Visitors may call
the Museum about upcoming field trips.
Education - More Than a Museum
Creating An Educated Future
The very heart
of the Museum's mission is education. A vital outreach program enhances
the art and natural science curricula at local schools. Elementary
students have an opportunity to study art and natural science in
Museum classrooms. Lectures, studio art classes and University of
California Extension courses are regularly available for adults.
Docents offer daily tours of the Museum and weekly gallery talks.
Annual Family Days provide the community with rich, family-oriented
learning activities.
